Valve’s VR masterpiece, now felt on your skin

Half-Life: Alyx is the game that proved virtual reality could carry a AAA blockbuster. Set between the events of Half-Life and Half-Life 2, it puts you in the boots of Alyx Vance in an impossible fight against the Combine. Five years after launch it is still the benchmark every PCVR title is measured against, and with an OWO haptic vest it stops being something you watch and becomes something your body registers.

Because here is the thing about haptic feedback in VR: your eyes and ears were already inside City 17. Your skin was not. OWO closes that gap.

Why Alyx is the perfect game for a haptic vest

Alyx was built around physicality. You reload by hand, you lean around cover, you pry open doors. Every action already asks your body to participate, so adding haptic sensations does not feel like a gimmick bolted on top. It completes a loop the game designed from day one.

Valve chose Half-Life over Portal for exactly this reason. A fully VR Portal was considered too disorienting, while Half-Life offered the right blend of story, combat, puzzle, exploration and interaction for the medium. That blend is also what makes it such a rich canvas for haptic immersion: quiet exploration, sudden panic, and firefights that hit like a hammer.

What you will feel with OWO

The OWO integration for Half-Life: Alyx maps in-game events to the vest’s muscle zones using electrical stimulation rather than vibration, which is why an impact reads as an impact instead of a buzz. Expect to feel:

  • Weapon recoil, with every shot from the pistol, shotgun and SMG pushing back with its own signature.
  • Taking damage, so headcrab lunges, Combine fire and barnacle grabs land on the zone that makes sense.
  • Healing, because the health station rush is unmistakable once you have felt it.
  • Gravity Gloves, with that satisfying snap when an object flies into your hand.
  • Environmental effects, the pressure and tension of the world around you.

Every effect is adjustable. The mod ships with a configuration panel where you set the intensity of each sensation and even change which feeling a specific weapon triggers, so you can tune the vest to your own threshold. It is the same approach behind every title in our library of compatible games.

Five curiosities you probably did not know

Russell's lab full of CRT monitors in Half-Life: Alyx, home to several easter eggs

  1. It was built by Valve’s biggest team ever. Around 80 developers worked on Alyx, roughly a third of them veterans of the previous Half-Life games.
  2. The Gravity Gloves are named after their creator. In-universe they are Russell’s invention, and fans nicknamed them the “Grabbity Gloves” long before the community settled on “the Russells”.
  3. Russell’s lab is an easter egg goldmine. A sticky note reveals his password (pw:lazl0, a nod to Laszlo from Half-Life 2), his CRT desktop is buried in a dozen C++ scripts each claiming to be the final version, and his recycling bin is labelled “Incinerator”, a Portal reference that still hurts.
  4. There is a hidden achievement in a bobblehead. Use the Team Fortress 2 Scout bobblehead in Russell’s lab as a waypoint marker and Steam rewards you for it.
  5. Getting there took longer than making it. Valve had to finish the Source 2 engine first, a stretch the studio internally nicknamed “The Wilderness”: roughly five years of stalled projects before Alyx development properly began in 2016.

It paid off. Alyx swept VR Game of the Year at the 2020 VR Awards, Best VR/AR Game at The Game Awards, and the Steam Awards VR category, with GameSpot naming it Game of the Year outright.

How to play Half-Life: Alyx with your OWO vest

Setup takes a couple of minutes and runs alongside the game. You can check the full entry for Half-Life: Alyx in our compatible games list at any time.

  1. Put on your OWO skin and connect it through the OWO app.
  2. Get the OWO integration for Half-Life: Alyx from our downloads page, GitHub or NexusMods.
  3. Add -condebug to the game’s launch options on Steam.
  4. Extract the script files into your game directory, or let OWOAlyx.exe handle the install for you.
  5. Launch the OWO Half-Life: Alyx Interface and hit Auto-Connect (or connect by IP).
  6. Start the game as usual and feel City 17 for the first time.

Feel the fight, don’t just see it

Half-Life: Alyx changed what people expected from virtual reality. Adding an OWO haptic gaming vest changes it again: the recoil, the hits and the tension stop being information on a screen and become something you actually feel. If you own the game, this is the closest you will get to standing in City 17 yourself.
